To understand the depth of India’s HDI challenge, consider these three facts:
In AY 2023–24, 35,652,226 Indians earned annual salaries between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹500 crore. Spread across an average 36-year working life, this means the economy creates only about 9,90,340 such income-sustaining career outcomes each year.
India currently has 70,018 colleges and standalone higher-education institutions (Ministry of Education). On average, each institution enables fewer than 15 individuals per year to reach a career that delivers this level of income stability and upward mobility.
Yet, in 2021–22 alone, 107 lakh students graduated with degrees and diplomas from these same institutions.
This mismatch is not merely an education problem—it is an HDI problem.
When careers fail to generate dignified income, healthspan shortens, financial stress rises, lifestyle diseases accelerate, and families remain trapped in low-resilience cycles.
